A Curious Case: The Last Snowfall in Citrus County, Florida

Snow in Citrus County Florida

Has It Ever Snowed in Citrus County, FL?

Florida, the Sunshine State, is best known for its warm tropical climate, beautiful beaches, famous amusement parks, and orange groves. It is a haven for snowbirds fleeing the northern chill. However, did you know there was a time when Citrus County, Florida, was graced by the uniqueness of a winter wonderland? Let’s take a fascinating journey back in time to chronicle the day the skies of Citrus County, Florida turned white.

The Day Everything Changed

On January 19, 1977, residents of Citrus County woke up to a day that would go down in history. As dawn broke and the sun’s first rays touched the sky, they sparkled not on the typical Floridian dew but on a winter spectacle most Floridians had never seen – snow!

That morning, newspaper headlines screamed about an unusual happening. Weather forecasts turned topsy-turvy. Millions across southern and central Florida, including the residents of Citrus County, opened their doors to soft, fluffy snowflakes gently falling from the sky.

The Aftermath

The National Weather Service reported a surprising weather system sweeping in from the Gulf of Mexico. Overcast skies, record-breaking low temperatures, and enough moisture set the stage for the unthinkable. The Florida snow event, often referred to as ‘The Great Blizzard of 1977.’

According to The Tampa Tribune and the St. Petersburg Times, the snow began to fall in Citrus County around 8 a.m., in a world turned white, children gleefully sprinted outdoors to play in the frosty flakes, and adults watched awe-struck at the unusual meteorological occurrence. The typically green landscapes of Citrus County were shrouded in a delicate blanket of white, icicles became a temporary dazzling piece of décor, and life, as Floridians knew it, paused momentarily to appreciate this natural anomaly.

Even though the snow was not heavy enough to accumulate and melted soon after touching the ground, it indeed was an event capturing the state’s and particularly Citrus County’s heart. The local citrus growers spent a restless night trying to protect the county’s namesake crop from the unexpectedly harsh weather. For that day, Citrus County felt more comparable to Colorado than any corner of southern USA!

This event, significant enough to leave an enduring imprint on the residents’ minds, is still fondly recalled by those who witnessed it. The memory of seeing snow in such an unlikely place feels like a moment plucked from a dream, something they would tell their grandchildren about.

Could It Snow Again?

The rarity and beauty of the 1977 snowfall in Citrus County, Florida, intrigue meteorologists, weather enthusiasts, and both old and new Floridians. This event serves as a touchstone, an exception proving the rule about Florida’s otherwise sunny, warm weather. It’s been over four decades since that snowy day, and there hasn’t been a repeat since then.

The last snowfall in Citrus County stands as a beautiful, frozen moment in time reminding us of the unpredictability of weather and the magic within those unpredictabilities. So, every time Floridians feel a little chill in the air, they might just glance towards the sky and wonder, ‘Will Mother Nature surprise us again?’

As of 2025, that answer has been “no.” It has, however, snowed in Northern Florida recently. Click here to read all about it!
